What a fabulous book! It’s honestly like nothing I’ve read before. It’s fantasy, politically scheme-ish (wink), funny, mysterious and so well done!
Sorrow has grown up in the shadow of her older brother who had died and sent her nation into 18 years of grief and mourning. It’s been pretty crappy (no music, no colors, no fun) for everyone. Because her dad’s condition, she needs to run for office so their nation can survive.
The main character, Sorrow, is an instant favorite! She may not wield a sword but she is the sword herself from her words, choices and willingness to challenge herself to go beyond what’s comfortable. She takes risks and never backs down. She’s amazing. Not only was Sorrow a great character but all the characters were super fleshed out. From main characters to minor ones you knew exactly who they were, whether it was the fae boyfriend, the father figure, the arrogant political adviser, they all were fabulous.
I loved the sarcastic humor in this book. (I ALWAYS WANT MORE HUMOR IN FANTASY, WHY DON’T MORE BOOKS DO THIS??)
I literally had no idea where the story would go in the end and I LOVE unpredictability. If I already know how it’ll end, I’m disappointed. I’ve read too many book lately that it’s so obvious how the hero will win at the end and I hate that. Why even read it if I know what’s going to happy. But State of Sorrow did not disappoint!
If you like books where you don’t know who to trust, it’s a little dark and full of impostors, scheming, fantasy elements, humor, and heart, State of Sorrow is for you!
*I think this book is considered YA fantasy, but it’d say it’s more a cross over from YA to Adult. Some of the content is more adult in nature.

About the Author
Melinda Salisbury lives by the sea, somewhere in the south of England. As a child she genuinely thought Roald Dahl’s Matilda was her biography, in part helped by her grandfather often mistakenly calling her Matilda, and the local library having a pretty cavalier attitude to the books she borrowed. Sadly she never manifested telekinetic powers. She likes to travel, and have adventures. She also likes medieval castles, non-medieval aquariums, Richard III, and all things Scandinavian The Sin Eater’s Daughter is her first novel. She can be found on Twitter at @MESalisbury, though be warned, she tweets often.
