I’ve had a couple people ask me how do you actually do a chat because they just didn’t know. So here’s a quick explanation.
All chats have a special hashtag specific to the chat. I co-host a blogging chat on the last Tuesday of every month at 9:00 PM, EST called The Blog Hop Party Chat and our hashtag is #BHPChat.
If you click on the hashtag you’ll go to a special page that shows all tweets that use that hashtag. What’s nice about this is you’ll see tweets in order and with ANYONE who uses the hashtag. You don’t have to be following them to see their tweet.
There are multiple ways to do a Twitter chat and you just have to decide what works for you!
- Tweetdeck: One popular site used for Twitter chats is tweetdeck.com. You’ll log into it with your Twitter account and it’ll pull up something that looks like this. You set up columns for whatever you want. You can have hashtags, your notifications, messages, etc. If you set up a column you can see what’s happening in the chat and your other notifications in the process. Depending on your chat it sometimes is hard to keep up with because it’ll scroll through very quickly.
- Twitter on the computer: You can always just follow the hashtag (click on the hashtag) on your regular Twitter account. Make sure to click LIVE if you want to keep up with it in real time.
- Twitter App on your phone/tablet: My favorite way (personal preference here) of chatting is through the app. Tweetdeck always overwhelms me so I like using the app. I can scroll through the chat slowly and make sure I see everyone’s tweets. The main disadvantage of doing this is responding to notifications. You have to go to your notifications to read and respond then go back to the hashtag and catch up. But I prefer going slower. Plus on the app you can use emojis. So that’s always a win win. 😉 Make sure you click on ALL TWEETS.
Twitter chats are a GREAT way to meet other like minded people. Many of my good friends came from talking to them at a chat. One of the earliests chats I participated in was the #K8chat that is Thursdays at 9 pm, EST.
There are ALL kinds of chats from blogging, to specific books, to readathons, to whatever! I hope you find some and jump in, they are one of my FAVORITE THINGS!
