I was very fortunate to receive an advanced copy of Caraval from Flatiron Books! It was quickly becoming one of my most anticipated books because it sounded so magical and something I knew I’d love. So needless to say, I was thrilled a copy showed up on my doorstep! 🌹🎩🎪🕰✨
Here is a tweet from last May showing off just how gorgeous the design work is for this book!
Caraval is a once a year performance where people can attend to either participate in Caraval or to observe. There’s always a mystery that needs to be solved and the winners get prizes. Scarlett has long wished to attend Caraval but because it won’t travel to the island she lives on she hasn’t been able to. She’s written to Legend, the mastermind behind it all for years begging him to come.
Scarlett’s life is not easy. She has a very abusive father and desperately wants to be married so she can escape.
Her sister Tella has other plans.
What I loved:
- The writing: There’s no arguing here, Stephanie’s writing is wonderful! It’s magical, descriptive, engaging and I found it beautiful.
- Magical setting: Magic, mystery, mayhem, what’s real and what’s not real. All these things blended to make such an amazing story and I loved the worldbuilding in Caraval. When she gets to Caraval it’s such a fun and exciting place to be! There are people who are cutthroat about the competition, those who seem to be mad, those who are enjoying the food & drinks and those who aren’t trustworthy. From the gondolas to the shops the setting was truly magical.
- Sisterhood: I loved that Scarlett would do whatever it took to take care of her sister. It’s nice to see a book that has, at it’s heart, a story of sisters navigating through life together.
What I didn’t like:
- I struggled some with the romance in the book but I think it’s all designed to make you question everything and everyone in the book so overall I was good with it. I’m super curious to see where it’ll go in book 2!
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Caraval and I can say it was a fantastic read and worth the hype! If you love great storytelling, engaging characters, mystery, and magic, you’ll love the world that is Caraval!
My rating: 4 stars
