It’s funny how I ended up reading/listening to Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Joey from www.afterthought.com invited me to participate in his year end Thinker Awards post where I get a huge list of categories and put in my favorites (check out the post here!) and when it came to favorite verse…I had nothing. I don’t ever read them so to make sure I did the best I could, I downloaded two audiobooks and Long Way Down was one of them.

An ode to “Put the Damn Guns Down”, this is National Book Award finalist and New York Times best seller Jason Reynolds’ fiercely stunning novel that takes place in 60 potent seconds – the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother.
I listened to the audiobook, which I will say might be the best way to read it. Jason Reynolds narration is perfect and he brings the story to life. Plus it’s only 1 hour and 45 minutes so is the the perfect audiobook if you’re new to them or need something shorter than 10 hours.
The book is in verse, which I thought at first I wouldn’t like but it was very easy to follow along. It wasn’t confusing in any way. It follows a young man whose brother is killed and decides to follow “the rules” and take revenge out on his brothers killer. On his ride down the elevator he encounters people in his past…and who all happen to be dead. They help Will to know what happened in their own lives in hope it’ll help Will with the decision he makes.
*Audiobook bonus: There is an interview at the end of the audiobook with Jason Reynolds and it explains his passion for writing this and it’s absolutely worth listening to!
I gave this book 5 stars and I definitely recommend this to everyone!
