Why I thought about this
A few weeks ago I made my 16th book trailer for Nevernight. After I had finished and published it, I got to reflecting on it’s process. EVERY time I make a book trailer there is a day of self-doubt, a day where I truly don’t know if it’ll come together. And to be honest, I’ll hate my trailer. Every time.
Every time I start a new book trailer I feel like it's never gonna come together. Hopefully this one will!

I got to thinking about this and realized that on those days where I look at my work in progress and realize it’s NOT what I want it to be it spurs me to make it better!
How Self Doubt Makes Us Work Harder
lack of confidence in oneself and one’s abilities.
Self-doubt really messes with us and it brings out all our insecurities. “I’m not good enough. Other people are better. No one will like this.”
Whether you are a blogger, a writer, an artist, a booktuber, whatever art you are creating I think we all feel this way more times than we want to admit.
And there are two ways we can react to self-doubt:
- Give up.
- Work harder!
The first is what we’re most tempted to do but honestly, NO ONE can bring to the world what YOU will bring. I think we forget that we are all unique and have lots to offer. We easily compare ourselves to others but the problem is, we’re not them!
What I find myself doing while making my trailers is, while I’m in a moment of self doubt, I look at it and realize it’s not what I want. Then I decide I’m going to fix it until it’s better! I keep working at it and working at it until I feel satisfied with the outcome.
In regards to my Nevernight video or any of my trailers, if I had settled it would have been crap! But because I realized it wasn’t up to par and had that moment of self doubt I pushed myself to make it better.
If you’re doubting your abilities on whatever you’re creating, then GREAT! It means you know it should be better so use it to do just that, make it better! Let’s create! I can’t wait to see what you make!
Do you have these moments and how do you work through it?
