This week: Chasia from Lloyd Reads

Introducing Chasia!

chasialloydMy Rec:

Many of my favorite books happen to be New Adult contemporaries. I could talk about them forever, and when I was given the chance to rec a book on The YA Book Traveler (thanks, Sarah!), I knew I would pick a NA contemp. It was hard deciding on one, but I realized I would regret not trying to get Courtney Milan’s Trade Me on more people’s radars.

Why I Love It:

Milan is such a phenomenal, smart writer – she could pen a how-to guide for operating a coffee machine, and I’d rush to add it to Goodreads. She has such a gift for bring characters to life, and our protagonists in Trade Me feel like real people I could have gone to college with. Even if I didn’t already love Milan’s works, it would have been impossible for me to say no to this book. A poor, female, Chinese college student swapping places with her rich, white, male classmate? Yes! Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Tropes are abundant in NA, and Trade Me is no exception. Billionaires, fake relationships, family secrets, etc. But this book subverts these familiar tropes and creates something unique. We get a thoughtful examination of sexism, racism, classism, and mental health, wrapped in a thick layer of unforgettable humor and sparkling romance.

One of the best parts of this book is the focus on family. The romance is a big story, but I’d argue family is even more important here. Too often we have protagonists struggling with their parents because their folks are terrible. But the parents in Trade Me are great people, they just have different priorities than their children. They love their kids and communities intensely. How family is handled in this book is so refreshing.

Trade Me is great for anyone who seeks a charming romance, loves laughing, and doesn’t mind having a box of tissues nearby just in case.

About the Book

Trade Me (Cyclone, #1)
Trade Me (Cyclone #1)
by Courtney Milan

Tina Chen just wants a degree and a job, so her parents never have to worry about making rent again. She has no time for Blake Reynolds, the sexy billionaire who stands to inherit Cyclone Technology. But when he makes an off-hand comment about what it means to be poor, she loses her cool and tells him he couldn’t last a month living her life.

To her shock, Blake offers her a trade: She’ll get his income, his house, his car. In exchange, he’ll work her hours and send money home to her family. No expectations; no future obligations.

But before long, they’re trading not just lives, but secrets, kisses, and heated nights together. No expectations might break Tina’s heart…but Blake’s secrets could ruin her life.

Oh this is new to me, and so happy to see some diversity in NA. While it suffers from some tropes, it looks like this was a well thought out booj.

    Thanks for the rec!

I love reading books where the MC has great parents. I agree that it’s too uncommon! Sounds like a great book! Thanks Chasia!
