Wilhelmina has a hundred enemies.
HER FRIENDS HAVE TURNED. After her identity is revealed during the Inundation,
Princess Wilhelmina is kept prisoner by the Indigo Kingdom, with the Ospreys lost somewhere in the devastated city. When the Ospreys’ leader emerges at the worst possible moment, leaving Wil’s biggest ally on his deathbed, she must become Black Knife to set things right.
HER MAGIC IS UNCONTROLLABLE. Wil’s power is to animate, not to give true life, but in the wraithland she commanded a cloud of wraith mist to save herself, and later ordered it solid. Now there is a living boy made of wrait—destructive and deadly, and willing to do anything for her.
HER HEART IS TORN. Though she’s ready for her crown, declaring herself queen means war. Caught between what she wants and what is right, Wilhelmina realizes the throne might not even matter. Everyone thought the wraith was years off, but already it’s destroying Indigo Kingdom villages. If she can’t protect both kingdoms, soon there won’t be a land to rule.
In this stunning conclusion to THE ORPHAN QUEEN, Jodi Meadows follows Wilhelmina’s breathtaking and brave journey from orphaned criminal on the streets to magic-wielding queen.
1. For the series in general, what was your initial inspiration for The Orphan Queen?
It was an image of a young girl saving a young boy from her own people. You can see the exact scene in The Orphan Queen. From there, I thought about the characters’ lives, how that one act of mercy would affect both of them, and where they’d end up in ten years.
2. You wrote four novellas that released between The Orphan Queen and The Mirror King. Did you originally plan to write those and what was the process like creating them?
I didn’t plan to write them until after I had turned in the final draft of The Orphan Queen and I was working on The Mirror King. I’d been playing with the idea of writing Black Knife’s story in the back of my head, and one day when I had my editor on the phone (and thus my captive audience), I suggested maybe that was a thing we could do. She loved the idea.
I wanted the novellas to be like a serialized novel, which is basically how it ended up. Total, the wordcount is north of 55k, which puts it in novel territory! To make it work as a serialized novel, we discussed how the plot would break up into four parts so that they could be read all at once, or individually.
3. What was the most fun thing to write in The Mirror King?
I mean, there were a lot of fun things to write, which is kind of amazing since it was the book that (I’m pretty sure) tried to murder me in my sleep. But I’d been looking forward to writing that list my whole life.
4. The world gets expanded in The Mirror King. Tell us a little about that.
It’s funny that you say expanded, although it does for the readers, I suppose. In the story — for the characters — the world is actually shrinking. The wraith is creeping in, making the Indigo Kingdom a more dangerous place to live.
5. Do you think you’ll be writing any more duologies in the future?
Quite possibly! My next project is going to be a trilogy, and I have some standalone ideas as well. I do have a science fiction duology I’ve been working on in between other stories!
BONUS: Can you tell us anything about your next project?
There will be dragons, secret languages, and a slooooow burn romance.
Jodi Meadows lives and writes in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, with her husband, a Kippy*, and an alarming number of ferrets. She is a confessed book addict, and has wanted to be a writer ever since she decided against becoming an astronaut. She is the author of the INCARNATE Trilogy and the forthcoming ORPHAN QUEEN Duology (HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen).
*A Kippy is a cat.
