Hi everyone! I had the pleasure to attend the tour stop for Aurora Rising May 7th, release day! Susan Dennard was the stand-in Amie since Amie was home prepping for baby! Susan is always such a delight and did an awesome job moderating. Enter my awesome giveaway! It ends tomorrow!
Some highlights from the event:
Obviously, besides the authors, I love seeing my bookish friends! It’s always nice having an excuse to pull time from our busy lives and have a chance to see each other.
Here they come!
Jay was listing off that out of the 5 flights he had so far, he had been searched 5 times!
Interesting things Jay talked about:
Jay named Mia from Nevernight after Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction
Jay gave some really great illustrations on what it’s like to write. One of them was how stories are like traveling to a big city. You can see the city in the distance and it’s your destination. You also know certain things that need to happen along the way, like getting gas, snacks, etc. But the fun part and usually unknown is how your character gets from that starting point to the city.
Secondly, Susan asked Jay if he edits along the way or goes back later. He 100% says he edits along the way and feels it’s a waste to not do so. He gave an example of having a car that you know has a broken axle. You push your car to the ground to get it home when you really should have stopped and got it fixed first. You may have gotten that car home but it’s ruined now. He believes it’s important to fix mistakes along the way otherwise it’s a big waste of time later going back and fixing major issues.
Meeting the authors
The best time is getting a chance to chat with the authors. I’ve met Susan a few times and she’s always so sweet. She remembers my daughter I’ve brought to a few events.
This was one of the best author experiences I’ve ever had! I had previously made these fun characters cards of me and Christy and Kelly from Bookcrushin’ that Christy gave to Jay at YallWest. I told him I was the one who made them and he was like “Oh yeah, the YA Book Traveler.” It was so amazing that he knew who I was. I also had created a fan book trailer for Nevernight (watch here!) and he knew I had made that too. I thanked him for all he did for his readers and he was so grateful to all of us because it allows him to have the best job in the world. He fist bumped me here after realizing who I was and again when we parted. It was such a wonderful moment and authors truly are the BEST.
I decided to make this giveaway international. One winner will win a signed copy of Aurora Rising (note: Amie’s signature is a stamp), the event bookmarks, and a custom designed card I will make for you and your friends! We will build a custom squad for you!
